Wings Tutorial
This is a tutorial for Paint Shop Pro 7 on how to do fairy wings.  They look like an oil slick, almost, or at least they will when you're done.

Step One:
I start with my doll, which I have already completed as far as clothing and hair.  I have chosen a "manga" base by Angy Chan.

Step Two:
I add a new raster layer to the doll, named Wings.  I then take the same color from her hair curls and draw an outline of a wing on her right side with the paintbrush tool, set on size 1.   Usually, it takes me a couple of tries to get one I like.

Her wings are still a bit jagged, so we're going to clean them up a bit, with the eraser tool, set on size one.  Just get the little double edges.  I also went back to her hair and erased the curls that over lap the wings.  Finally, I connect the wings that are under her arms.

Step Three:
When you are satisfied, go to the Selection wand    and select the Wings.  You then have to go to Selections and Invert Selections.  After you do this, then go to Edit and Copy, then Edit, and Paste as New Selection.  Once you do this, then go to Image, and Mirror.  Then, with the Move tool  move the wing into place on her left side.  You will still have the little ants crawling, so press Ctrl D and that will stop it.

But we're not done yet.  Select the Erase Tool, and erase the lines of the wings that go over her body.

THERE!!!

Step Four:
Go to the Fill tool   and then click on the Color you have selected.  You should get a screen like this:

Where it says Light, go up five points.  Here it is 31, so I am going to go up to 36.  Then, with the fill tool, I am going to fill in the White areas of the wings.

Step Five:  Once you have her wings colored in, now comes the Retouch Part.  Select the Retouch tool , then go to View and tool bars.  Select the Tool Options Pallet.  Then adjust the settings.  You want Lighten RGB, which should be the first one.  These are the settings we want.
Then, with the retouch tool, smear it around on the doll's wings.  Play around a bit.  Once you are happy, then it's time for smudge.

Step Six: Again, select the Retouch tool, only this time go down to Smudge.
These are what your Settings should look like. Play around until satisfied, but be careful not to go over the edges of the wings.  Now we have our doll.  Go to Layers, and select Duplicate layer.  The new layer will be called Copy of Wings.

Step 7:
With the new layer, go to the layer pallet, , which should look like this: .  Where it says Normal on Copy of Wings, go to DODGE, and take the transparency down until you are satisfied with the look.  It should make your doll's wings look very shiny.  Here is what mine looks like:

Step 8:
Rename the Copy of Wings as Dodged Wings.  Then, go to the Select Wand again, and select the wings.  Then go to Selections, and Invert.  Then, go to Add New Raster Layer, and call it Wings Gradient.  And then to Layers again and View Currently Only.  Now, on your pallet, you should have something called Styles.  On the top box should be a little arrow.  Click on that and select what looks like a box of stripes.  That is the gradient layer.  A good place to get Gradients is +Psp , which I have joined.  It's free, and you can find lots of gradients, tubes, you name it!  I'm going to select a new gradient.  Double click on the gradient box, and you get your gradient edit screen.  Then have the settings as this

don't worry about what gradient you're going to choose yet-that's the fun part.  I usually play around until I find the right one.  Use the Fill tool again to fill inside the crawling ants.  For the opposite wing, I choose Invert Gradient, so they look even.  Then choose View All again.  Your doll should look like this:

Step Nine:
Then go to the Layer Pallet again, and for the Wings Gradient layer, choose Color.  You can play around with transparency, but I usually don't.

Step 10:
I then choose the crop tool  and drag it over my doll until the background is much much smaller.  I then save as, and save the whole thing as a PSP file.  That way, if I ever need to go back and change something, or look at it, all my layers are there.

Step 11:
Finally, we are going to create it as a Gif file.  Go to Layers and Merge ALL FLATTEN:  Choose the Fill tool again, and go back to a single color.  (A Paintbrush icon should show up).  Choose a color that is NOT included in your doll.  I choose a bright green.  Then I flood fill the background in green.  Sometimes, there are a few spaces between her hair, or under her arm that are still white-I fill those too.  Then go to Colors and Decrease Colors to 256 colors.  Save as a GIF file-so you don't erase your PSP file.  It will say no alpha channels are saved-don't worry about that. Heere is your doll with her green background:

Step 12: Almost Done!  Then, go to File and select Export and GIF Optimizer.  Under Transparency, select Areas that Match this Color.  Click on the color box, and choose the GREEN of your background.  Under Tolerance, select one.  Then click okay.  It will immediately ask you to save your gif file again.  Do so.
When you open your fairy on a webpage, or just in your own viewer, the green shouldn't show!  If you're unsure of using GIF Optimizer, you can always go to  Gifworks and make it transparent.

Your finished result:

There you go!
